How do I compare quotes?

So, you've decided to get the recommended three quotes but now are overwhelmed choosing between them. Understandable! Quotes can vary wildly in price and detail. We have seen some other painters quotes and they leave a lot to be desired One stated simply 'paint wall in kitchen' In this instance our quote (or any good quote) would include, at the very least:

• Which wall is being painted • The preparation level (filling, sanding, gap filling, mould treatment etc)

• Details of any undercoating/priming • The number of top coats to be applied, including the type, colour, sheen level and quality of the paint. 'Paint wall in kitchen' is not acceptable and leaves you at high risk of a poor outcome. Here's what to look for: • Clearly defined areas to be coated.

• Cleary defined areas NOT being coated.

• Does the quote include all paint and materials required to complete the job? • Preparation specifics for each surface i.e., sanding, gap filling, filling.

• Is removal of wallpaper/mould treatment included?

• Is undercoating of bare or filled surfaces included?

• Top coats: How many coats, water or oil based, colour, sheen level, quality level of paint.

• Level of sanding i.e., removal of all old coatings or just light sanding (particularly for staining/varnishing) • Does the quote include clean up procedures.

• Will the work be completed to Australian Industry Standards? • Is the painter experienced?

• Is the painter insured?

• Does the painter guarantee their work?

• A date and expiration date

And finally, how did you feel about the painter when you met them to quote the job?

Remember, good things are not cheap, cheap things are not good!
